The Americano Cocktail

.

Americano Cocktail – A once-forgotten cocktail only to reappear as a crowd favourite. A cocktail which comes with very unique ingredients. The recipe in itself was astonishing. Never ever in my wildest imagination could I think that just adding soda could make such a huge difference.  A difference in a good way. Initially, I was quite dubious about giving it a try, but curiosity got the better of me. Was I going to regret it? Ladies and gentlemen -Americano Cocktail.

Getting some extraordinary ingredients and making it a part of a great cocktail recipe is acceptable. But imagine taking some simple ingredients and creating a great cocktail out of it. It’s up to each individual to decide which one do they prefer. Wouldn’t want to speak for someone else, but if you ask me? I would go for the latter. The beauty of taking simple ingredients and shaping them into something dazzling is where the artistry lies.

Not many would agree here, some would even go ahead and say,” I could have done it”. But the truth of the matter is that someone out there thought and went ahead and executed it first. There are no mysteries or secret ingredients behind these cocktails. This could also make it hard for most to digest when the need of the hour is signature cocktails, which is the exact opposite of what I mentioned above. No one is wrong here. Everyone must be aware of the Nokia story, Innovation is the need of the hour. And Bars are compelled to have Signature Cocktails to keep up with the latest trend of modern-day cocktails. The customer gets what the customer wants. And yet, the so-called classic cocktails outsell the signature cocktails in most of the bars globally 😉

The Americano cocktail story

Americano Cocktail

When we talk about Campari, it’s an Italian liquor. Not many have managed to develop a liking towards it. On the opposite side, there are some who just love it. Americano cocktail takes its inspiration from the Milano Torino cocktail. The Milano Torino cocktail is a combination of Campari and Red vermouth. The Milano Torino is also considered as the precursor to the Americano Cocktail and Negroni. The Americano Cocktail went ahead and added soda to the already existing ingredients, while the Negroni switched the soda to gin to make it a bit stronger. Now we it all started with Milanio Torino.

The Americano cocktail is one of the simplest cocktails out there. A build-up cocktail with just 3 ingredients, or you could say 2 alcoholic beverages in equal portions and top-up with one non alcoholic beverage. All of these are poured over a tall glass with ice. The most surprising is the addition of soda as the third ingredient, and the other two being liquor. This makes a hell of a difference. It actually changes the entire texture of the cocktail. The addition of soda reduces the bitterness of the Campari immensely. It surprisingly makes the Americano Cocktail a less harsh or, should I say, a bit smoother.

  5. Orange Zest
equipment
  1. Measuring jigger
  2. Bar spoon
  3. Tall glass

How the make an Americano Cocktail

  1. Add 20ml of Campari and Red Vermouth to a tall glass with ice
  2. Top it up with 30 ml of soda
  3. Squeeze the orange zest and drop it in the cocktail
  4. Lift the drink with a bar spoon ( optional)

The addition of soda over 2 liquor got me a bit sceptical to begin with. But to my surprise, I was totally astonished by the end result of the cocktail. The soda plays the role of binding, which helps in balancing the bitter-sweet notes from Campari and Red Vermouth. On sipping, you first get bittersweet notes of the liquors, followed by short, weak, lingering flavors of the Vermouth. The flavor of the vermouth, which lingers, is entirely unexpected. Drawing an instant awe towards the cocktail. A super refreshing cocktail and not just a summer cocktail. You could have this cocktail all year round and still have no regrets J .  We call it the Americano Cocktail.

Cheers!
